Thank you to Sabeena Bubber for bringing this Cause to our attention.
Words of thanks from Lachlan & his family:
Dear Sabeena and Brokers that Care,
With deep gratitude we are greatly humbled with your decision to choose our family to receive a bursary for our son Lachlan. These funds will go a long way to help pay for the many rehabilitation therapies he needs to recover from brain cancer-to get back to being a kid again. Our sincere thanks to Sabeena for suggesting to us to put our name forward.
Nomination Story
Lachlan was having morning sickness and dizzy spells in the spring of 2020. It didn’t seem serious. It might have been anxiety. He was an otherwise healthy and active boy of 12, the youngest of 4 siblings. But Mom (Allie) knew something was wrong, having spent the past 18 months helping Lachlan’s older brother Max recover from a traumatic brain injury. She pushed for an MRI, which was not easy as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.
*Max (Lachlan's brother) was the victim of a violent attack on Grouse Mountain when he was only 13. He was stabbed in the head with a ski pole that resulted in a brain hemorrhage.* He is now fully recovered.
On September 11, 2020 Lachlan had an MRI. The result was every parent’s worst nightmare. He was diagnosed with a malignant brain cancer called “medulloblastoma”. Emergency brain surgery was required to remove the tumour. This was the start of Lachlan’s cancer journey.
After surgery, Lachlan and Dad (Dave) travelled to Seattle for specialized proton radiation therapy that’s not available in Canada. Due to COVID restrictions, they isolated in Seattle for 7 weeks of radiation treatment. Lachlan returned home to North Vancouver and started chemotherapy in December … 9 rounds of chemotherapy over 12-months!
There’s no way to sugar coat this. Cancer sucks. Radiation and chemo was hell. Lachlan lost 40% of his body weight. He spent a total of 195 days and nights in the oncology ward at BC Children’s Hospital. His hair fell out (9 times). He could barely eat or drink. He was sick almost every day. He threw up so often that he had a feeding tube inserted into his stomach. He battled infections and leakage of toxic cancer drugs into his chest.
And due to COVID, he was isolated. Only Mom and Dad were allowed into the hospital. No siblings, grandparents or friends could visit. Or his special puppy Milo! Through it all, Lachlan never once complained. He never said …“this is so unfair” … or “why me?”. He just got it done. We are so incredibly proud of what Lachlan has accomplished. Such a strong, courageous and inspiring young man!
Lachlan was released home on December 30th, 2021. So, what happens now? The reality is that recovery will be just as hard as the treatment. Physical. Emotional. Cognitive. Life. It’s a work in progress … 1 breath, 1 step, 1 day at a time. Allie remains on leave from work to provide the full-time medical care that Lachlan requires at home.
Elevator Pitch
Lachlan’s family has been through so much and the costs of therapies with one parent off work are mounting. Lachlan has three siblings. His brother Max was the victim of a violent attack on Grouse where he was stabbed in the head with a ski pole and almost died from a brain hemorrhage. Lachlan has completed the treatment for a malignant brain tumour that has left him needing to relearn how to walk as well as restore his cognitive and emotional challenges before he can even return to school. His family has a long road ahead with mounting costs for various therapies required to get him back to being a normal kid again.
